  • September 3: Soldiers fall to River City Christian - In the battle of River City schools, the Crusaders defeated the Soldiers 43-26 at River City Christian field.  The Soldiers fell behind 0-12 following a fumble return that the Crusaders returned for a touchdown, but battled back with 2 touchdowns of their own to knot the score at 12-12 at the half.  Following a Ryan Azzaro fumble recovery of an errant Crusader pitch, the Soldiers marched 28 yards for their first score, a 3 yard run by Nick Goodman.  Nick would find the end zone again right before halftime on a broken punt play in which Tom Cottingham found Nick for a 53 yard catch and run.  The Crusaders answered on the opening drive of the 2nd half and then extended the lead to 25-12.  The Soldiers battled back following a fumble recovery by Tom at the Crusader 17 yard line.  Nick added his 3rd touchdown on a nifty 8 yard run and Tom ran in the extra point to close the gap to 25-19.  In the 4th quarter, the Soldiers gave up 2 consecutive scores and fell behind 37-19.  The Soldiers closed their scoring on a 65 yard, 6 play drive capped by a 6 yard scoring run by Tom.  On defense, Nick and Kevin Johnson led the Soldiers with 10 tackles, while Michael Murata tallied 9.  Tom had 7 tackles, 3 for loss, to go with his forced fumble and 2 fumble recoveries.
  • August 26: Soldiers drop season opener to John Paul II - RCBA played a courageous game against the John Paul II Guardians, but couldn't overcome injuries in the 2nd half, falling 57-31.  The Soldiers fell behind early 8-0, but answered on two big plays - a 23 yard touchdown run by Nick Goodman, and a 70 yard touchdown pass from Joel Fasenmyer to Nick, giving the Soldiers a 13-8 lead.  Following a Guardian score that had RCBA down 14-13, Nick found running room for a 43 yard run down the left sideline to put the Soldiers back on top 19-14.  In the second half, Joel found Tom Cottingham behind the defense for a 42 yard touchdown and the Soldiers pulled within 1 at 25-26.  For much of the 2nd half the Soldier defense was forced to play with only 5 players and had difficulty containing the Guardians.  The offense added a late score as Joel found Evan Ashburn for a 30 yard catch and run.  On defense, Tom led the Soldiers with 9 tackles (1 for loss).  Ryan Azzaro added 5 tackles - 2 for loss - and a pass breakup.  Samson Garza (1 for loss), Michael Murata (2 pass breakups), and Nick recorded 5 tackles each.  Jon Hanlon recorded a sack and a forced fumble in his first game.
